Where Are You?

Genesis 3:9 Then the Lord called to Adam and said to him’ “Where are you?”

I heard Him call my name. He has come looking for me. My hearts leapt in my chest. My smile grew and my step quickened. I ran as fast as my legs could carry me yearning to be in His arms, waiting to be lifted up as a babe in His arms and twirled around in His delight. I have to get to Him. I have to tell Him how much I love Him! He came looking for me!

“Where are you?”

I stopped suddenly realizing I couldn’t face Him so I hid among the bushes. I crouched low when I heard His footsteps my heart beating wildly as fear sipped through every pore of my being. He had warned me, but I didn’t listen.

The voice of the world had called to me and I answered. The world tempted me, it called my name seducing me with all it had to offer and I thought; maybe if I try it once, I’ll never look back again. Maybe if I dipped my feet in the crimson stained crowd, I will remain spotless. I thought I was strong enough. I thought I could go into the world and come back without incident. I was wrong. I was so wrong. I went and tasted the world and I loved what it had to offer. I loved the colorful garments of sin, pushing aside the offense that came with it. I kept saying I will go back to the spotless fields of my Father before He could find out I was missing.

Yet, here He is looking for me. “Where are you?” He called.

As I hid among the bushes, listening to His voice calling me and His footsteps as He came near my hiding place, I thought of what to say. Who should I blame? What should I say? Would He still love me? John 3:16 came to mind. For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. The Father had loved me enough to give His Son as a ransom for me. Even though He had warned me about the ways of the world, He’d prepared away for me to come back to Him. He must know. He must know I have fallen. He knows everything, sees everything yet, He had come looking for me.

“Where are you?” He called.

“Here I am.” I answered then waited as I hastily said a prayer of repentance. Before I could say the last word, His hand pushed aside the bushes and His voice full of love stilled my hurried prayer.

“There you are.” I looked up at Him. His eyes shown with a love that reached into my sin stained heart and wiped it clean. “I missed you.”

I flung my arms around His neck and clung to Him. I repented sobbing, and welcomed His love that was already nourishing my soul. I felt His forgiveness and my heart shone again.

Sin will separate you from God as did it Adam and Eve. Sin will drive you out of the “Garden of Eden” but His love will always draw you back into His arms when you repent. Don’t let the desires of the world pull you away from the only love that will never leave. God is constant and He is always available. When you learn how delightful He is, what the world has to offer loses its appeal.

One of my favorite things about God is His desire to be with us. He has never stopped walking in the cool of the day coming to us for some quality time. Start responding to that call and let Him be all you need.
